Books and early writing

My first published work was some poetry that I wrote in my 20's, it was the usual angst ridden stuff. In 1996 a short story Break all the rules, about how best to cook conger eel, was printed by the Womens' Press. Other short stories followed then I got commissioned to write a novel.

Writing under a nom de plume I wrote erotic fiction for Virgin Publishing. Being trained scientifically I stuck strictly to the guidelines and I have to tell you, writing sex for 3 pages, every 3 pages takes its toll!

Next I combined those scientific skills with writing to produce Watercress But No Sandwiches – 300 years of the Columbia Road area. This was a winner of the prestigious Raymond Williams prize not least because it was designed by the wonderful Jonathan Barnbrook.

It tells the moving stories of the old Eastenders, whose memories through their families go back almost 200 years. Through this book I was encouraged to write the play DIAMOND.

After being out of print for years I am delighted to say that it has been reissued in its original award winning format. Follow the link at the right to purchase the book.

In 2009, working with the Shoreditch Trust and Carolyn Clark, its then deputy Director, I co-wrote The Shoreditch Tales.

In 2008 my nephew, Danny, sent me an email about a bunch of animal characters based on people he had worked with during his 20 year career on the trading floors of the City of London. I was intrigued and between us we have produced a children's book, The Oonford Detective Agency. This book has strong eco themes and is truly eccentric.
